SDL Video Tutorials

I’m just kind of throwing this idea out there – but would any of you benefit from video tutorials with me explaining things as each tutorial is coded?

Do you like the idea of video tutorials?

As an aside, here’s a quick plug for Skylar Payne. He has made some video tutorials that you can check out:

    Again… some problems with translator…

It is true that the video has to complement the text. It is a very good
idea to use the video section to display the running game or perhaps for setting
different IDE’s. I also think it a good tool to show
those incomprehensible errors that the compiler throws.

For example, a page that explains you opengl on videos, and
were difficult for me that I have no ear for English. However, if I can read well and understand what is written in English or, at most I use a translator. This is so the tutorials reach more people who do not necessarily speak English.

So I do not think you should give much emphasis to the videos, but rather complementary.

    Thank you for everything

Thanks everyone for the compliments on my text tutorials. Keep the conversation going.

Video tutorials are best at giving overviews and aren’t so helpful at getting the details communicated. I wouldn’t like to have to rewind and playback sections which I could have just read. On the other hand, using video as an overview of a tutorial would indeed be useful or you could do non-tutorial videos.

Haha, thanks for advertising me =D. Regarding my video tutorials, I have 2 more done, but I’m currently trying to find some video editing software that doesn’t completely ruin the quality =/. So if anyone has any suggestions, that’d be great =D

(For those of you who couldn’t tell, I’m Skylar Payne =p)

    • XianForce says:

Double comment, but thought I’d throw in my opinion on the subject of you making the video tutorials.

In my opinion, I’d say no. You have a great talent for making text tutorials that communicate a large amount of information very well. Making a video tutorial would just be the same text tutorials in video form. While I think this would benefit a few, I think your time and efforts would be better spent expanding on the text tutorials and making new ones, rather than return to old ones to simply create it in a ‘video format’.

I like the Idea but as with many here, I’m concerned about the effort and time needed.

Besides, it makes no sense to me watch someone typing a code if I can read it in pure text, so if you do the video tutorials, make sure the information you’ll present really needs a video to be well understood.

On the other hand, since we’re talking about game development, a video might help people understand what they’ll get with that code and why a particular line or block in the code was necessary.

For every video tutorial you think you might do, I guess that the above should be considered.

    • Eric says:

I agree with what Leonardo says about “someone typing a code if I can read it in pure text”. The tutorials could use a short video or screenshot to see what the program looks like when it’s finished. The tutorials are wonderful as they are right now, having a video may confuse other people that do not use the same IDE.

I voted ‘no’, not because I don’t like the idea but because I think your current tutorials are good enough.

What I mean is that video tutorials often offer an “easier” way of learning, but your current tutorials are so easily read and understood that there is no need for such a thing :)

As commented by Matias, I’d rather like to see more text tutorials than I want video tutorials. Of course, in the end I guess it’s all up to you, isn’t it?

  8. NordCoder says:

I very much support the idea of video tutorials, so if you feel you have the time, go ahead :) I also like the idea of the videos being accompaniments to the text tutorials.

Making good, “flowing” video tutorials will probably take some time and trial, so you might as well start now :) Us commenters will hopefully provide you with some valuable feed-back.

  9. Matias says:

It’s a good idea but what worries me most is your time. I honestly prefer that you give us more tutorials to explode your mind trying to give us a tutorial with its own video.

Also, I have really wanted to see the tutorial opengl and sdl.

If you see that going well with the tutorials you had thought to publish, perhaps you could make a remake after the tutorial with the video version.

Well thank you very much, excellent tutorials

    • Tim Jones says:

I have an SDL / OpenGL tutorial? Or do you mean making additional SDL / OpenGL tutorials?

This would probably only be something I do after a tutorial is release, and I have some free time.

      • Matias says:

Yes… continue adding more tutorials of opengl and sdl. Maybe a fusion with some of the tutorials that will come. Sorry for me english.

  10. Aaron says:

    Hey Tim,

Whilst text tutorials are great, I do think that the more senses used when interpreting a tutorial will result in overall better understanding and reapplication of the material.

I think it’s a great beneficialt idea. I’m curious on how would this method would differ from the usual text tutorial in terms of effort and time to create it? Would this be easier for you? or would you end up doing Text Tutorials with videos to accompany them?

    Regards,
    Aaron

    • Tim Jones says:

I probably wouldn’t replace any tutorials with video only tutorials, but the videos would accompany an existing tutorial. Making the video itself is pretty straightforward, the difficult part is making sure I know what I will say, and make it flow nicely. Listening to someone stumble over his words, or ramble on is very boring.

      • Aaron says:

Too true sometimes it can be quite difficult. At least your conscious of this though, ‘seems many people put videos out stuttering and tripping over half constructed sentences that their ideas can be very difficult to understand.

Another thing that bothers me just a tad bit.. I’ve seen a few video tutorials out there which are about as difficult as trying to listen to a World of Warcraft player describe how their gear affects their… uhh.. nevermind.

( No offense to WoW players, but for non WoW players, listening to a ramble of acronyms and abbreviations you don’t understand can NO fun at all! ).

Some videos just make one feel sorry for whoever they’re watching!
