Live Programming Help

February 22nd, 2008 by Tim Jones Leave a reply »

I know, this is kind of a weird thing and never heard of on tutorial sites. But hey, why not? I’ve decided to use a free live chat program to help any of you readers with whatever help you may need. Please keep the questions within the context and scope of this website, for example, don’t ask me a Java question, as I probably won’t be of much help. I will, however, take questions regarding the following languages and libraries: SDL, C/C++, OpenGL, Lua, PHP, mySQL, JavaScript, AJAX, or programming questions in general. I hope this is a useful feature to all of you out there.

  1. Hey, I came across this blog post while searching for help with JavaScript. I have recently switched browsers from Opera to Mozilla Firefox 3.1. Now I seem to have a issue with loading JavaScript. Every time I go on a page that requires Javascript, my browser freezes and I get a “runtime error javascript.JSException: Unknown name”. I can’t seem to find out how to fix it. Any aid is greatly appreciated! Thanks

I like the ideas! For the sake of ease, a race to the top game wouldn’t be too bad at all I think.

I really appreciate those who like my tutorials, very encouraging. :)

I understand when real life gets in the way of online life (pesky reality!). Just wanted you to know there are people eagerly awaiting your next tut, these things are great.

If I could make a suggestion for the game, perhaps run with the current entities tutorial art and such? Make a little Yoshi game clone or something, just a simple jump ‘n stomp or something, maybe a race to the top of a platform? It just seems like a natural progression, as you’ve used the art for animation and entities now.

Still very much alive. Handling input events will be based off of the current Event tutorial posted. I’m working on the next Map (Tileset) tutorial currently. And then I’ll be looking at Entities again, making collision and such. Then another “make a full game” tutorial. Not exactly sure what game it’ll be yet.

Still alive? Looking forward to your events tutorial, interested to see how you handle input. That’s really the last part needed on this site for you to have a great framework for a game.

Thanks for the Tip gaten. I’ve included some various ways of contacting me. The banner I have though does not make you download any software, it runs right through the website like eCommerce sites. So if you click it you will get a popup window to talk with me (if I’m online).

Why not an IRC channel or IM? It’s nice of you to do this, but making people download proprietary Windows only software when we’ve got proven, cross-platform solutions out there seems like a bit of a waste.
