How far can you bend the definition of "side-scrolling shooter"? Would something like Geometry Wars (or other Asteroids style) qualify? What about Zone 66, Defender or Solar Jetman? They're all shooter games that are from a side (or top, which was apparently ok) perspective and scroll. Mainly: Can the screen scroll in different directions based on the movements of the player? Can it scroll both horizontally AND vertically? Can the player face in every direction? Does the screen have to scroll at constant speed?

Here are videos of the games I mentioned:

Zacaj,
Hrm, I suppose that is okay. I would encourage you though to be able to set some rules for level generation though.

hmmm... I am not really looking to learn something new like that. Even if it is easy it would probably take up too much time.

Although I have heard of Lua a while ago and thought about it. I will learn it after the project. I just a working example that can load a sprite. I can easily make the entire game modable. So no need for it now. Although I thank you for your suggestions.

Charlie and the Banana, and Kizare both use Lua - it's fairly simple to implement. You can check them out under the Projects page.

you could make some kind of scripter. Use the LUA library and allow lua scripting :P. I have never done such a thing, so I dont know the amount of work that would go in. After this contest is done, I will be looking in to it to expand on the game.

Well I wasn't going to do tile based or scrolling bg. I was thinking more like pixels moving (different sizes and speeds). This makes it a bit more realistic. Enemies would come in stages based on how many enemies are left etc...

Making different amounts of enemies for your stages and which enemies that would be easy. The problem would be to create new enemies with different attack strategies. I could make basic rules (options for moving would be straight, zigzag, curvy, etc...)(they can attack diagonally straight etc...).

I guess it could be done without much extra problems. But it still seems a bit limited. Alright then. I'm going to get started. This is going to be fun.
