Okay, okay, I know. I fell off the face of the planet for the last 4 weeks or so. Sorry. To get things rolling along again, I want to narrow down what we should do for this next contest. Either, a 2D Fighting game, or 2D Racing game.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
Examples:
2D Fighting Game
- Street Fighter
- Mortal Kombat
- King of Fighters
2D Racing Game
- Micro Machines
- Super Off Road
I'd be excited for either tho.

If I think of a real simple implementation I think a racing game should contain at least a hint of:
- car physics - just a simple one: speed up and down and being spin off the road if you drive too fast
- collision detection with other cars (and their behaviour if hit), collision with the environment/offroad
- (2d) scrolling of the road/environment (houses, trees, who knows...)
- position of your opponents and the complete calculation stuff (because they drive, too, don't they)
- and so on...
But maybe I am thinking of too much and this is not a problem for an experienced game developer? I would surely need to do some research and need some time for it. And a contest should not be held only for the experienced coders, shouldn't it? :)
The real challenge starts when the simple racing game should contain some goodies like an implementation of weapons or stuff, blown or used tyres, etc.
Even the old commodore 64 classic "Burnin rubber" (ah, the good old times *pausing for a moment*...) is a real, real simple racing game which is not just about driving.
Sure, a fighting game isn't easy to develop, too. But, a simple one do not need screen scrolling, there's the obvious collision detection between two opponents, less physics, and a less demanding opponent management.
Just a little (!) self discussion why I think a racing game should be the next contest... but (hopefully) a fighting game follower will light up how complex the development of a simple 2d fighting game is ;)
Thanks for the new contest. I really hope I got the time to participate!!! All the best...

By the way, if you remove gravity from the SDL Collision Events tutorial, you'll have a scrollable map, with entity-to-entity collision and map collision. Just a thought...
